What is Liposuction?

Liposuction illustration

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to eliminate localized and hard-to-lose fat deposits, refining body contours with precision. Common target areas include the belly, upper back, "love handles," buttocks, hips, thighs, and tummy. The procedure offers enduring results when coupled with a healthy lifestyle and weight maintenance. At Refine Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery Clinic, our experienced consultants ensure optimal outcomes, even in cases of varied weight or skin laxity.

The Liposuction Procedure:

1. Consultation:

  • Comprehensive consultation to understand your goals and customize the treatment plan.
  1. Anesthesia:
  • Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring comfort during the procedure.
  • In some cases, local anesthesia with tumescent solution may be used for minimal fat extraction.
  1. Procedure Steps:
  • Surgeon marks the targeted area for fat removal.
  • Injection of a solution containing anesthesia and medicine to minimize blood loss, bruising, and swelling.
  • Breakup of fat cells using high-frequency vibrations, laser pulse, or a water jet.
  • Small incisions made to insert a suction tube connected to a vacuum machine, facilitating fat removal.
  • Movement of the suction tube to loosen fat and extract it.
  • Drainage of excess fluid and blood.
  • Closure of incisions with stitches and application of bandages.
  1. Post-Procedure:
  • Elasticated support corset or compression garment worn continuously for 6-8 weeks to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Antibiotics and painkillers prescribed to minimize infection risk and manage discomfort.
  • Hospital stay overnight or as a day care procedure, depending on the extent of fat extraction.
  1. Recovery:
  • Limited strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks, with walking and general movement encouraged.
  • Visible results may take up to 6 months as swelling subsides.
  • Stitches removed after a week.
  • Gradual resumption of normal activities, including contact sports and strenuous exercises, after 4-6 weeks.
